I Lost My Passport 48 Hours Before an International Flight. Here's Exactly How We Saved Our Trip.

There are travel nightmares... and then there's realizing your passport has vanished just two days before you're supposed to leave the country.

That's exactly what happened to me.

My daughter and I were counting down the hours until our trip to Ireland when I grabbed our passports to pack. Hers was exactly where I had left it. Mine wasn't.

After tearing apart the house, retracing my steps, and desperately searching every bag I owned, I came to a sickening realization: I had almost certainly lost my passport on my previous trip home from Canada.

Our flight was Monday morning.

At that point, I had two choices: cancel the trip or do everything possible to save it.

I chose option two.

First: Don't Panic

The biggest lesson I learned is that losing your passport right before an international trip doesn't automatically mean your vacation is over.

The U.S. State Department does issue urgent passports for travelers with imminent international travel—but getting one takes persistence, flexibility, and a little bit of luck.

Refresh. Refresh. Refresh.

Urgent passport appointments are incredibly limited.

I spent hours refreshing the online appointment system because openings disappear almost immediately. Eventually, someone's cancellation became my opportunity.

If you can't find an appointment right away, don't give up. People cancel constantly, and new appointments can appear throughout the day.

Be Flexible About Where You Go

The closest passport agency was not going to work for our itinerary.

Instead of accepting defeat, I searched farther away and found an appointment in New York City.

Using hotel points made the unexpected trip much easier to justify financially. We booked a hotel with Hyatt points, flew to New York the night before, and positioned ourselves to be first in line the next morning.

Sometimes saving a vacation means being willing to travel somewhere completely different before your actual destination.

Don't be a no show for your flight

One of the biggest surprises during this experience was how helpful American Airlines was.

Because I contacted them in person the day of my flight, they were able to move us to a later flight that same day, giving me enough time to receive my passport without having to cancel our entire itinerary.

Every airline has different policies, but always reach out and get your options.

Don't Forget Your Congressional Office

This is a resource many travelers don't know exists.

If you're truly running out of time, your U.S. representative or senator's office may be able to assist with urgent passport situations. They can't magically create appointments or guarantee a passport, but they often have constituent services teams that work directly with federal agencies and may be able to help when you're out of options.

It's absolutely worth making the call.

What I'm Changing Before Every International Trip

This experience completely changed how I travel, and I've already made a few permanent changes.

I'm using a dedicated travel passport holder. Instead of tossing my passport into different bags, it now has one designated home that only comes out when I'm traveling. This cute one is for traveling alone, and this one is for when I need to keep track of the entire family.

I'm adding a tracker to my passport. Apple AirTags are fantastic if you're in the Apple ecosystem, but there are also ultra-thin tracker cards that fit inside a passport wallet without adding bulk. Android have options too! Here are thin tracking cards and if you like something closer to the look of an Airtag, these are a great option.

I'm keeping all of my travel documents together. Boarding passes, Global Entry card, backup credit card, and passport now stay in the same travel wallet, making it much harder for something important to disappear. Just don't forget a tracking card (Apple compatible or Android compatible)! I now know how essential that step is!

The Moment Everything Changed

After one of the most stressful 24 hours I've ever experienced, the passport was finally in my hands.

A few hours later, we were on our flight to Ireland.

Looking back, I still can't believe we pulled it off!

I hope I never have to experience another passport emergency, but if I do, I'll be much better prepared. These are now permanent additions to my packing list:

• RFID passport holder

• Apple AirTag or Android smart tags (I have these in every bag and piece of luggage)

• Tracker cards for passport wallets and organizers: Apple compatible, Android compatible

• Family travel document organizer

• Anti-theft crossbody bag

I can assure you, they're inexpensive compared to the cost—and stress—of replacing a passport or missing an international trip.
